On the 14 February 2024, the EU-funded project BreedingValue organised a workshop at the French National Research Institute for Agriculture, Food, and the Environment (INRAe), in Villenave d’Ornon. More than 120 researchers and breeders from Europe and beyond attended the event online and in person.

Severe cases of atopic dermatitis (AD) and psoriasis (Pso) significantly impact lives, often leading to further health complications and higher healthcare costs. Early intervention can lessen this burden, but there is currently no way to identify high-risk individuals.

On 2 March 2024, Eurice Senior Project Manager Tamara Messer presented the Horizon 2020 project INCREASE at the St. Ingbert Seed Exchange, a local event aimed to promote the swapping of regional seeds, emphasising the importance of preserving agricultural and culinary diversity. Organised by the city of St. Ingbert, where the Eurice headquarter is based, the event took place in the city’s town hall.

Between April and mid June, the German National Contact Point (NCP) Bioeconomy and Environment will offer two webinar series for interested parties who are planning to submit a proposal in the Horizon Europe Cluster 6 or the new EU Missions. In the webinar series, participants will receive helpful information and tips on various topics relating to the application process. In addition, the workshop series will deepen participants' knowledge of various application topics through interactive exercises in small groups.

Long-term complications of COVID-19 on the brain are recognised in patients across all age groups and independent of infection severity. Symptoms of such neurological deficits are diverse and include concentration problems, memory lapses, brain scan alterations, and parkinsonism. Called NeuroCOVID, this phenomenon has profound implications, posing unprecedented risks to both society and healthcare systems.

Millions across Europe are affected by Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD), encompassing Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis. As diagnosed cases rise, the need for personalised solutions to manage and improve the lives of individuals with IBD becomes increasingly critical.

The Horizon IP Scan was launched as a pilot service by the European Commission and European Innovation Council and SMEs Executive Agency (EISMEA). Operated by Eurice from November 2020 until November 2023, the service helped over 350 European start-ups and SMEs in valorising intellectual assets generated in collaborative research and innovation (R&I) activities.

How can futures thinking boost Europe's innovation in deep tech? This has been the question at the heart of a workshop organised by the Joint Research Centre's EU Policy Lab and the European Innovation Council. Our food technology expert Dr Sonja Bergner followed an invitation from the European Innovation Council to contribute to the Horizon Scanning workshop on Food & Agriculture on 31 January 2024.

On 7 February 2024, the European IP Helpdesk team kicked off a new phase of intellectual property (IP) advisory services for European small and medium enterprises (SMEs), innovators, beneficiaries of EU-funded research and innovation (R&I) projects and stakeholders within the European innovation ecosystems – such as universities, public research organisations including their technology transfer offices and spin-offs.

Tamara Messer, senior project manager at Eurice, recently spoke to the 'Saarbrücker Zeitung', a newspaper for the Saar region in Germany. The topic of discussion was the successful Citizen Science Experiment (CSE) that is underway as part of the INCREASE project.

BreedingValue, part of our Food & Farm-to-Fork projects, has just been spotlighted in the "Horizon" magazine. The feature, "Berry tasty: the fruits emerging from new breeding and processing", delves into how BreedingValue's research is helping to develop strawberries and raspberries that are not only more resilient to climate change, but also do not compromise on flavour or health benefits.

Every year, on the 10th of February, World Pulses Day, a designated United Nations event, is observed globally to raise public awareness on the environmental significance and nutritional benefits of pulses.
