As European Raw Materials Week 2024 takes place in Brussels this week, the event once again underscores the EU’s commitment to securing sustainable access to critical raw materials, a cornerstone of Europe’s green and digital transitions. This year’s gathering of experts and stakeholders emphasises the importance of strategic initiatives aimed at strengthening supply chains for critical sectors, including clean energy, mobility, defence, and aerospace.

The European Quantum Technologies Conference (EQTC) is the premier networking event in Europe for scientists, entrepreneurs, and stakeholders in the quantum community. Since its inception in 2019, the conference has grown significantly, and in 2024 it marked its fourth edition. Held in the beautiful city of Lisbon from 18 to 20 November 2024, the event brought together a diverse range of participants from industry, academia, and policy levels. These stakeholders, united under the Quantum Flagship (QF) Initiative, are working together to drive forward the Second Quantum Revolution in Europe.

In September 2024, President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, presented the new College of Commissioners to the European Parliament. Alongside a series of personnel changes, the structure of the Commission itself has been adapted to foster more interactive and interconnected collaboration among its members. This new framework reflects the EU's core priorities: prosperity, security, democracy, and competitiveness, set against the backdrop of ongoing digital and ecological transformations. Von der Leyen's vision is to place research, innovation, science, and the economy at the heart of Europe's future, directing investment towards strategic priorities that drive groundbreaking innovation.

Every 14 November, World Diabetes Day shines a spotlight on diabetes mellitus through a global campaign led by the International Diabetes Federation. With each year’s campaign focusing on a specific theme, 2024 centres on well-being. In alignment with this theme, the portfolio of diabetes projects at Eurice and its sister company RISE have launched a collaborative campaign to raise awareness and emphasise the common goal of all projects: improving the daily lives and experiences of people living with diabetes.

EURICE engages in three new EU-wide initiatives to strengthen knowledge valorisation practices in Europe.

The MuSiC4Diabetes project has just released their new animated video explaining the project's stakes, mission and impact. In this two-minute-long clip, the viewer follows the life of Kate, a young woman living with diabetes and facing the psychological impact of diabetes and the practical challenges that her treatment implies. The video further introduces the device in development within the MuSiC4Diabetes project that combines breakthrough technologies that significantly improve the quality of life of persons living with diabetes:

The SUPERLASER project started in September 2024 with a successful kick-off meeting in Athens, and aims to develop a groundbreaking type of laser based on halide perovskite materials. These innovative lasers promise to deliver high performance, unprecedented precision, and environmental sustainability, making a significant impact on both science and technology. The project’s goal is to create sustainable, low-cost, and highly efficient lasers that produce ultra-narrow linewidths achieving superradiance at room temperature —an essential innovation for numerous advanced technologies such as quantum technologies, photovoltaics, and 6G communications, where coherent light plays a critical role in network synchronization.

The entire EURICE & RISE team met in Berlin at the end of August to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Berlin office. Since opening in 2014, the Berlin team has grown to over 20 people, making it a real success story.

Eurice proudly announced in June 2024 that INCREASE is the winner of the EU Prize for Citizen Science 2024. During the Ars Electronica Festival that took place in Linz, Austria from 4th – 8th of September 2024, the INCREASE team has now had the great honour and pleasure to officially receive the highly anticipated prize. Eurice was represented at the awards ceremony by INCREASE Project Manager Tamara Messer who expertly supports the INCREASE consortium in the successful implementation of the project.

Medical doctors are frequently overwhelmed by data and paperwork, while software developers for medical devices struggle to keep their solutions compliant with ever-evolving regulations. This is largely because regulators lack the necessary means to evaluate advanced medical software effectively.

Federal Minister Robert Habeck, together with several state economics ministers, recently approved the funding of 23 outstanding and forward-looking hydrogen projects, two of which are being implemented in Saarland: the infrastructure project "mosaHYc" coordinated by CREOS Deutschland Wasserstoff GmbH and the hydrogen production project "HydroHub_Fenne" run by HydroHub Fenne GmbH. The EURICE team accompanied and consulted both ventures during the proposal phase and is thus pleased to see the official green light from the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action.

The RELiEF project aims to reduce lithium waste by more than 70% by using previously unused secondary lithium sources. The outcomes of such an ambitious goal are many and varied, and the project had the opportunity to showcase the different pathways they represent at the Xplorer Conference, organised by RELiEF partner LUT in Lappeenranta, Finland, last month.
