European IP Helpdesk

Supporting innovators in turning intellectual assets into value

Flagship initiative of the European Commission, providing free first-line Intellectual Property (IP) support to European SMEs, start-ups, universities, research organisations and EU-funded R&I projects.

What the project is about

The European IP Helpdesk is a service initiative provided by the European Commission, helping innovators manage intellectual property in a strategic and efficient manner.

The service supports SMEs, start-ups, universities, public research organisations and beneficiaries of EU-funded research and innovation projects with first-line assistance for cross-border business, collaborative R&I and knowledge valorisation. Through its Helpline, training programme, publications and online resources, it translates complex IP issues into practical guidance that multi-actor R&I teams can use when developing, protecting, sharing and exploiting their results.

Why it matters

Ideas, data, know-how and research results only create value when they are managed strategically.

Many innovators - especially start-ups, small businesses or research teams - recognise the relevance of IP, but lack the time, experience or internal capacity to embed IP considerations in project work, business planning or exploitation pathways. Collaborative R&I adds further complexity, as partners can have different interests and mindsets around intellectual assets and their exploitation. By strengthening IP awareness and decision-making, the European IP Helpdesk helps organisations safeguard their assets, build partnerships and increase the impact of European research and innovation.
