“It’s time” - World Tuberculosis Day 2019

Each year on March 24, the World TB Day aims to raise public awareness about the devastating health, social and economic consequences of tuberculosis (TB) and the current global efforts made to end the TB epidemic. The date marks the day in 1882 when Dr Robert Koch announced that he had discovered the bacterium that causes TB, which opened the way towards diagnosing and curing this disease.

On the occasion of this year's World TB Day, the European grass-root consortium TBnet has published a video which is available on YouTube.

TBnet consists of healthcare professionals and scientists who collaborate to promote quality of care for tuberculosis patients by addressing health-inequalities, providing expert guidance in areas where clinical evidence is missing, defining research priorities, conducting multicentre clinical studies, and training early-career European clinicians and scientists.

The 2019 Theme: "It's time"

The World Health Organization (WHO) has launched a joint initiative "Find. Treat. All. #EndTB" with the Global Fund and Stop TB Partnership, with the aim of accelerating the TB response and ensuring access to care, in line with WHO’s overall drive towards Universal Health Coverage. This World TB Day, WHO calls on governments, affected communities, civil society organisations, healthcare providers, and national/international partners to unite forces under the banner "Find. Treat. All. #EndTB" to ensure no one is left behind.

Our Commitment

The EDCTP-funded PredictTB project ("Using Biomarkers to Predict TB Treatment Duration") was launched in April 2016 with the aim of shortening the standard treatment for patients with drug sensitive tuberculosis.

ScreenTB ("Evaluation of host biomarker-based point-of-care tests for targeted screening for active TB") aims to develop a point-of-care, hand-held, rapid screening test for TB that can be conducted on finger-prick blood in a laboratory-free manner.

Eurice supports both projects as a communication partner.
