Digital Media meets Physical World: ERC Grant for Saarland Researcher

Interactive Skin to Revolutionise the World of Wearables

Congratulations! The European Research Council (ERC) has selected the project “Digital Fabrication of Personalized On-Body User Interfaces” led by Prof. Jürgen Steimle from the Department of Computer Science at Saarland University for a Starting Grant amounting to 1.5 million Euros. The funding, worth in total 485 million Euros, will enable 325 young researchers across Europe to build their own teams and pursue groundbreaking ideas in the disciplines physical sciences and engineering, life sciences and social science and humanities.

With his project, Prof. Steimle aims to revolutionise the field of wearable technologies by creating body-worn electronics in patches made out of silicone and ultrathin rub-on tattoos. The new devices will resemble human skin and create an interactive layer which seamlessly blends with human skin. Interactive Skin may find applications in health monitoring, rehabilitation, robotics and mobile computing. The project was one of 146 projects selected out of a total of 1,288 submitted proposals in the field of physical sciences and engineering; a fact once again underlining the strength of Saarbrücken as a centre of research and innovation.

The ERC grants are awarded under the ‘Excellent Science’ pillar of the EU’s research and innovation programme Horizon 2020. Two thirds of the ERC budget is foreseen for early-career researchers and calls for proposals are published once a year. Set up by the European Union in 2007, the ERC attracts scientists from all over the world and has funded more than 6,500 top researchers to date.
