Combined 1st Workshop and 5th PneumoNP Progress Meeting successfully held in Bremen

From July 10 – 13, 2016 the PneumoNP consortium gathered together on the beautiful premises of Jacobs University Bremen to hold their 5th Progress Meeting in combination with their 1st Workshop.

The workshop entitled “Novel approaches to fight bacteria: From understanding the crossing of membrane barrier to the development of new nanotechnology-based drugs” was jointly organized by the cluster projects PneumoNP , NAREB, FORMAMP, all three funded under call NMP.2013.1.2-2 in FP7,and the IMI initiative TRANSLOCATION. Mathias Winterhalter, the coordinator of TRANSLOCATION, and his team at Jacobs University Bremen welcomed approx. 250 participants from the four organizing projects and from outside the consortia interested in EU-funded research in the field of novel drug development.

The workshop started with an introduction to the hosting projects on Sunday afternoon. Right before the European championship’s final between France and Portugal started, everybody was invited to enjoy a get-together barbecue at the University Club to kick off the workshop and to watch the match together with football enthusiasts from all over Europe and the US.

The next days were full of various interdisciplinary presentations and poster sessions leading to lively discussions between the participants. PneumoNP partners were actively involved as speakers in the sessions about nanoencapsulation, in vitro, ex vivo and in vivo animal models and translation to clinical development, a session chaired by PneumoNP co-coordinator Marco Marradi from Cidetec. Further sessions covered the topics of mass-spectrometry and fluorescence, impact of porin structure on antibiotic permeability and efflux pumps.

In the afternoons of July 11 and 12, the PneumoNP consortium met in a closed session to discuss the current status and progress of the project. PneumoNP’s project technical adviser (PTA) María Blanco Prieto, who will leave the consortium by the end of July 2016, took the opportunity to provide for the last time useful advice on the project’s progress. With the amendment recently agreed with the EC on additional parallel experiments with mice, the project seems to be right on track. Important decisions on the next steps with regard to the outcome of the experiments will be taken by the end of 2017 to push the project to a successful conclusion by the end of 2017.

PneumoNP is a 4-year collaborative project funded by the European Commission under the 7th Framework Programme. It aims to develop a theragnostic system for the treatment of Gram-negative bacterial infections in lungs.
