Full Title
“NanoCom-Network” - Advanced Processing and Characterisation of Micro and Nano Composites

Programme
Marie Curie International Research Staff Exchange Scheme (IRSES)

Contract number
247524

Abstract
“NanoCom-Network” is composed of two universities in Europe (Germany and Austria), one research centre (Germany) and four institutions in Latin America (Argentina, Chile, Brazil). The purpose of the network is to combine the thematic specialties of different experts in the multidisciplinary field of materials science in order to design new composite materials with superior properties and performance. In order to achieve this goal new characterisation techniques, especially for 3D imaging and analysis of the material architecture shall be developed. Techniques like Focused Ion-Beam Tomography, x-Ray (including synchrotron) tomography and Atom Probe Tomography will be applied and refined for the study of composite materials including in particular Nickel reinforced with Carbon Nanotubes for electrical applications, Al-based Metal Matrix Composites for structural applications and Nano composites with nanostructured coatings for application in manufacturing technologies. Research collaboration and exchange of knowledge will be reinforced by 39 individual researcher exchanges between NanoCom partner institutions as well as two network-wide workshops.

The main objectives of NanoCom are

  • To develop new high performance composite materials for electrical and mechanical applications, new effective production techniques and modern characterisation methods
  • To enhance research collaboration between EU and Latin-American institutions including improved accessibility to different research facilities of network members
  • To improve career perspectives of early-stage researchers by providing them with a multinational, interdisciplinary, high-level research training in Materials Science and Engineering
  • To strengthen the European Research Area by e.g. increasing its attractiveness for highly qualified third country researchers and combining European expertise in the field through networking
