It has been a successful premiere: On 5 December 2011 European Commission president José Manuel Barroso and Commissioner for Research, Innovation and Science, Máire Geoghegan-Quinn, launched the first ever Innovation Convention in Brussels. With the aim to promote innovation as the key driving force for sustained growth and competitiveness in Europe, top-flight speakers from all areas involved in research and innovation came to Belgium for two days to participate in various debates.

"Europe has to capitalise on its brightest and most innovative ideas. That is what Innovation Union is all about; that is what Horizon 2020 is designed to ensure; and that is what this Innovation Convention inspires us all to do", Commissioner Geoghagan-Quinn summarized the goal of the event.

In addition to the different panel discussions an exhibition show-cased innovative EU funded projects. Being in charge of communication and awareness raising activities of the European IPR Helpdesk project, Eurice presented the Helpdesk and its services in a mini-session to researchers and SMEs, and was available for individual talks at an information stand.

The European IPR Helpdesk is a service initiative of the European Commission offering free first-line IP advice, information and training to researchers and SMEs involved in EU funded programmes or transnational partnership agreements.
